R&L Carriers is a Wilmington, Ohio-based carriage company founded in 1965 by Ralph L. "Larry" Roberts I. It began with just one truck and has since grown into a fleet of approximately 13,000 tractors and trailers. The company is family-owned, which has contributed to its significant expansion over the years.

The pivotal moment for R&L Carriers came when its founder, Ralph Larry, purchased a single truck to transport furniture. He then acquired intrastate and interstate authority from Mayflower Moving and Storage, laying the foundation for what is now known as R&L Carriers, Inc.

The deregulation of the trucking industry in the early 1980s played a crucial role in the company's development. It coincided with the creation of a renewed system that propelled the freight industry to new heights, leading to the birth of R&L Carriers, Inc.

Initially operating solely in Ohio, the company quickly expanded to other Midwestern and Southern states in the US. As its influence in the freight industry grew, so did its financial strength. This was evident in its acquisition of Gator Freightways, Inc. in 1989, which significantly boosted its presence in the Southern states. Another acquisition followed in 1992, when Greenwood Motor Lines, Inc. was incorporated into R&L Carriers.

During the 1990s, R&L Carriers experienced substantial growth. The company added new terminals each year to enhance the quality and scope of its services. Acquisition strategies were at the forefront of their expansion efforts. In 1996, R&L Carriers purchased Herder Truck Lines, Inc., a carrier based in Texas. Over the span of five years, they expanded their terminals and services to include the New York Boroughs and 23 additional states.

Freight Density Calculator

Use Our Tool

To determine the freight density of your shipment, you need to calculate its cubic feet by using the length, width, and height of the load. You can do this by dividing the weight of the load by its cubic foot. The resulting value is known as pounds per cubic foot (PPCF). Keep in mind that the NMFC classes may vary based on handling, liability, and stowability, which can impact the cost.
